I’m a hockey mom!

6 year-old ET, waiting for a pass

I spent half of today at the rink.

I’m not complaining (mainly because The Husband usually shoulders most of the duty) but, once hockey season starts, our weekends are dictated by practice times and game schedules.

When the boys were babies and toddlers, I joked that they were only allowed to get involved in activities to which they could find their own way. I really didn’t want to be one of those moms, driving a minivan with a “Mom’s taxi” bumper sticker.

Well, it’s not a minivan and there’s no bumper sticker, but between soccer, swimming, Beavers, and now hockey it sure feels like a taxi. Continue reading

Torture in the Pit of Despair - The Princess Bride (1987)

Torture in the Pit of Despair – The Princess Bride (1987)

ET is going through a whiny phase. This has been ongoing for sometime but the long school days have made him tired and the whining has increased. At times it is like a dentist drill boring through my brain. This evening is one of those times.

I feel like running outside and screaming at the top of my lungs, but I’ve decided that just writing my way through it is probably the saner option. Continue reading

Buried treasure

20130902-225635.jpg

My personal philosophy is that we should just relax and chill out on the last long weekend of summer, but I’m willing to admit that the house does look better after a giant sort and toss. So I’m not too bothered by the forced labour on Labour day (I’m not even doing my fair share) but The Husband’s process is driving me batty. Continue reading

The loves of their lives

20130829-181331.jpg

This is a Ty stuffed monkey named Dangles.

In our house, he is goes by the name of Bobo (named after the baby monkey from the book Hug.)

Bobo was a 1st birthday present for CJ (from an awesome friend) and has been his near-constant companion for the past seven years. I say “near” only because Bobo doesn’t attend school or play outside. He does go on every trip, including this week’s camping, and is a well known figure at church and around the neighbourhood. Camping in Kejimkujik

My three boys have just driven away to go camping in Keji. I couldn’t go due to work commitments.

Kejimkujik National Park is where I grew up camping with my family and where The Husband and I developed our backcountry skills. We fell in love with long hikes and heavy packs and took on much bigger challenges.

What do you remember from when you were six?

20130806-225402.jpg

We just had an amazing day. There were roller-coasters, Ferris wheels, water-slides, tubing, and hours in a pool.

ET, our six-year old has been going full tilt since 7 AM, and has only stopped to eat. He has also been talking non-stop, giving us a play-by-play of every activity… even though we have been beside him for it all. Continue reading

My boys in a hole (2009)

Next year, we are planning to surprise the boys with their first trip to the Florida theme parks and I have no doubt that they will be over the moon with excitement… but they were also giddy with joy today because it was movie and PJ day at camp.

Letter to camp

Meatballs – Canadian camp comedy starring Bill Murray (1979)

CJ left today for a two night camp with BDN’s son. My son’s a very easy-going kid who makes friends quickly and adapts well to new situations. He’s been away at Beaver camp a couple of times and had plenty of sleepovers. The minimal preparations went smoothly and he was driving up with his buddy — nothing to worry about.

Until I forgot about the letter… Continue reading

What do birds and bees have to do with babies?

A couple of months ago we had “The Talk” with CJ. He had just turned eight, but that was just circumstantial. It had nothing to do with his age, it had everything to do with his curiosity.

I do this Mommy-thing where I remind the boys that I “made” them. Do you know what I mean?

Kid: Waaaa… I fell of my bike and there’s blood!
Me: Please stop ruining your knees… I worked very hard to make those!

Kid: Don’t look, you might see my bum!
Me: Oh please, I made your bum.

It’s not just me who does this… or is it?

The Husband said it was because of these constant reminders of his creation, that CJ persistently asked the question, “How does a woman make a baby?” Perhaps he was right, but it was the only Ace I had and I was going to keep playing it.
